Clarity is our business

Building on a quarter of a century of the plain language campaign in the West, Clear English India helps South Asian government departments, banks and financial institutions, law firms, scientific research bodies, IT companies, and individuals to communicate with clarity.

We believe that all communication — from State to citizen, industry to consumer, and trade to client — must be in plain language. Because:

You save time and money: If all your in-house documents, letters to customers, user manual and the like, are in plain language, you’d save time and money wasted in explaining what they 'actually' mean to employees and customers. If you do not like to re-read documents to understand them, why expect your readers to? Here are some examples how some companies benefited from clear English:

• When British Telecom produced a clearer bill in plain English, it received around 25% fewer enquiries each quarter. Customers also paid their bills more promptly, reducing the cost of collecting overdue bills.

(More case studies)

You build an image: Each letter that you send out to your customer, a potential customer, or the world at large creates an impression about you and can either retain or lose that customer for you. It's as important as that.

You are empowered: If laws were not written in legalese, you as a citizen would know your rights and duties better. (Remember, ignorance of the law is no excuse to not obey it, or so the lawmakers say.)

Communicating in plain English is easy, if you:
• respect the reader
• use the active voice
• use shorter sentences
• use 'you' and other pronouns
• use simple, everyday language as far as possible.
